How I Teach and Why It Works
I’m not a general math tutor who covers IB as one of many subjects. I’m an IB Mathematics tutor and it is the only thing I teach. AA SL, AA HL, AI SL, AI HL. That is my entire focus. I know the syllabus, the past papers, and the mark schemes because I work with them every day.
My Story
Math usually becomes difficult when students feel unsure about what to focus on and how to move forward. With so many topics building on each other, it is easy to lose confidence without clear guidance. This is especially true in the IB, where the curriculum is demanding and concepts build progressively.
I don’t just explain topics lesson by lesson. I plan and manage each student’s learning. From identifying gaps to setting clear goals and pacing topics correctly, I help students build understanding in a structured and supportive way.
My focus is IB Mathematics across AA and AI, SL and HL. I guide students through calculus, algebra, functions, and statistics with clarity and purpose. They understand what they are doing and why it works.
After years of focused one-to-one tutoring, I provide targeted preparation for IB exams and the Internal Assessment, always aligned with IB assessment criteria and expectations.
Every student receives materials I have built and refined over years of teaching. Revision sheets, worked examples, topic-by-topic question sets, and real IB past paper questions classified by topic so students can focus their practice where it matters most. Why IB Math Requires Specific Expertise
IB Mathematics is not like other high school math courses. It has its own structure, its own assessment style, and its own expectations. A tutor who understands the IB framework makes a measurable difference.
Marking Is Different
IB exams award method marks, follow-through marks, and accuracy marks separately. A correct answer with missing working can score 1 out of 6. Most students don’t know this.
The IA Has Five Criteria
The Internal Assessment is worth 20% of the final grade. It is marked against five criteria that most students misunderstand without guidance. Generic math help won’t cover this.
Four Separate Courses
AA and AI have different syllabi, different exams, and different expectations. A tutor who mixes them up or treats them the same will cost you marks.
How Sessions Work
Every student gets a different plan. But the process follows the same three steps.
Identify
I start by identifying where marks are being lost. Not just which topics are weak, but which exam techniques are missing. Past papers and mark schemes show this clearly.
Target
Sessions focus on the areas that will produce the biggest grade improvement. No time wasted on topics already understood. Every session has a specific purpose.
Adjust
As performance data comes in from practice papers and tests, the plan adapts. What worked, what didn’t, what to focus on next. The approach changes as the student improves.
What Experience Actually Teaches
After thousands of sessions with IB students, you develop pattern recognition that no textbook provides. You learn where students consistently lose marks. You learn what examiners reward and what they penalise.
This experience shapes every session. I don’t guess what a student needs. I can see it in their working within the first 15 minutes.
