IB Math Analysis & Approaches SL
AA SL is built on algebra, exact reasoning, and a non-calculator Paper 1 worth 40% of the final grade. Students who understand the content but struggle under exam conditions lose marks they should not be losing.
You understand the concepts, but past papers are still hard. IB Math AA SL tutoring can help you change that.
What IB Math AA SL Actually Demands
AA SL is the only Standard Level course with a non-calculator paper. Paper 1 is worth 40% and tests algebraic fluency, exact trig values, and structured reasoning without any technology. These are the challenges I address most often in IB Math AA SL tutoring.
Paper 1 tests algebra without a calculator
90 minutes of exact values, algebraic manipulation, and mathematical argument with no technology. This paper is worth 40% of the final grade. Students who practise with a calculator during the year find Paper 1 surprisingly difficult. The skills it tests need separate, deliberate practice.
Exact trig values must be recalled from memory
The unit circle values for sine, cosine, and tangent at standard angles appear throughout Paper 1. Students who have not committed these to memory lose marks on questions they otherwise know how to solve. There is no formula booklet entry that helps here.
The Internal Assessment is worth 20% of your grade
A mathematical exploration of 12 to 20 pages, assessed on five criteria. Many students underestimate the time needed for the IA or choose a topic that does not allow them to demonstrate the required level of mathematics. A well-planned IA can make a real difference to the final grade.
Method marks are lost through unclear working
IB examiners award marks for process, not just answers. Students who skip steps, write disorganised solutions, or fail to show reasoning lose marks they did not need to lose. Learning how to write for an examiner is as important as learning the content itself.
I work with AA SL students on exactly these challenges.
After 6,500+ hours teaching IB Math across 40+ countries, I know what separates a 5 from a 7 in AA SL. Sessions target the specific areas where you lose marks: Paper 1 technique, algebraic fluency, clear written communication, and time management across both papers.
